King Rocker

The self-titled King Rocker demo is about as meat-and-potatoes as music can get. It's basic driving rock, fairly energetic, and the band sounds tight, as if they've been playing together for a good long time. They are the type of band that are better live than on a recording. They are that band that always seems to come onstage right after your third beer hits and anything with a beat starts sounding good. The production quality isn't quite up to snuff on the demo - the vocals sound tinny, as if they are coming from a distance. It's hard to tell how much a good production job would help them out, though.

There are six songs on the CD, four written by Victor Galvan and two by Tony Red-Horse (aka Tony Slash). I like Red-Horse's songwriting better, by a good margin. His "Greaser" is the best of the set ("I drink all night, I run away from the rising sun.") It's not quite a reincarnation of Country Dick Montana, but it's nice to hear something that at least reminds me of Country Dick for a change. The guitarist stands out relative to the others from the standpoint of musicianship, but it's still nothing real earth-shaking.

In summary, King Rocker is a solid band, the kind of corn-fed stock from which good opening acts come. They seem destined to be a career opening act, or maybe Friday night regulars at some local honkytonk from where their pickups know the way home.
