The Killers: Hot Fuss

This review has been hanging in the balance between three stars and
Mass Grave for over a month now, ironically causing me to spend
more time agonizing over it while CDs more worthy of review must
be out there somewhere, waiting patiently. Somewhere....

Anyway, back to The Killers. Hot Fuss has received more than its
share of airtime, at least 'round these parts. There are at least
four songs that have made the rounds: "Mr. Brightside," "Somebody
Told Me," "Smile Like You Mean It," and "Change Your Mind." That's
pretty impressive, but it reminds me of those TV shows that got
popular back in the 80s where there are 5 or 6 plots all going on
at the same time, and as MAD Magazine once observed, it's designed
to obscure the fact that none of the plots is very good. On the
other hand, none of them is very bad either. Exactly what you have
with The Killers Hot Fuss.

Or, perhaps it's like a guided tour of the Forbidden City of
China. If it's really Forbidden, then you wouldn't be able
to tour it, so your radar should be up right off the bat
that something is amiss. This is extremely analogous to Hot Fuss,
although it may take you years of patient consideration to make
the connection. I would be doing my readers a disservice by
spelling it out in any more detail than that.
Suffice it to say that this is decent music, well-crafted,
a bit boring, lyrics kind of silly, homosexual undertones
if not overtones (but hey we're among friends, so big deal). Teenage
girls will love The Killers. I don't love them, but I don't
hate them either. If you are a teenage girl or secretly aspire
to be one, then I heartily recommend this CD. For the rest of
us, let's move forward and find some music that doesn't make one
yearn for a brisk walk over hot coals just to break the monotony.
