Louis XIV: Illegal Tender

Some time back, the Earth must have passed into a parallel universe without
us realizing it, because KROQ is starting to play good, innovative music
again. Maybe their old Red Hot Chili Peppers CDs finally gave up
the ghost after their ten millionth play, I'm not sure.

One song currently getting its share of play is "Finding out True Love is Blind" by
Louis XIV. This ironically titled song is a celebration of diversity in
the most democratic sense of the word - a lusting after every imaginable
shape, size and color of woman - he likes the smart girls, with the glasses and
the books; he likes the stupid girls, who give him dirty looks. And it's got
a great hook: the refrain "Finding out true love is blind!" is driven into your
brain over and over, like a stake. The bridge? "Wind you up, and make you crawl
to me... Tie you up, until you call to me." Maybe there's hope for us yet.

It's a very encouraging sign to see a band not afraid of writing something
a bit catchy for a change. The catchiness and pop quality is a throwback
to the early 80's, and from there bouncing all the way back to Herman's
Hermits: "I'm (Louis the XIV), I am I am!" Coincidence? I think
not. Anyway, Illegal Tender is great fun. Stay tuned for a review of
their first full-length CD when it hits the stands. We'll roll out the
red carpet for any band with "Louis" in its name! Ever notice what a
beautiful sound that word has? "Louis" ... "Louis" ...
