The Ponys: Laced With Romance

Here's another band that sounds like a throwback to the 80's (early Cure) and
even the 70s (Mott The Hoople, The Knack). But since the present
decade sucks so intensely, living in the past can be considered a good thing,
in general, at least until we find our way out of this swamp we're in. The
other proviso is that we have to realize we're just reliving better days, and
not pretend it's new ground. The Ponys satisfy both of those criteria, so I'm
going to recommend this CD as being worthy of your time and attention.

It starts off very promisingly with the cheerily titled "Let's Kill Ourselves,"
with its driving guitar riff that made me throw an extra 20 pounds on the lat
pulldown machine I happened to be on while listening to the CD for the first
time. After that comes "10 fingers and 11 Toes," again, a catchy, driving,
energetic number. Those are a couple of very good songs and you wonder
if they can keep the pace up; unfortunately, they don't quite make it. Some
of the later stuff on the album sounds kind of repetitive and inconsequential.

All in all, it's a good CD to throw on and listen to while you're doing
yardwork, or working out, or just need a musical energy boost. Don't
expect it to be Abbey Road or Exile on Main Street, and
you won't be disappointed. I have the same hope for The Ponys as I do
for so many up-and-coming bands: that they can find a way to build on the
really good songs and discipline themselves to edit out the filler next
time. And to my son Little Lou, who says he flat-out refuses to listen to
any band called "The Ponys," I say that The Ponys probably
would have a good laugh if they heard HIS band's name (which I will not
reveal here in the interest of his personal safety!).
