The Kyra Bernice page
|
Kyra Bernice has a pleasant, plaintive voice, somewhat reminiscent of
Linda Rondstadt in her "Blue Bayou" days. Dead Girl on Earth is a
collection of 12 songs that is described on her website as an "independent release."
However, it's marked on the CD itself as being a "Demo." It can't be both a
demo and a release, and it's too long for a demo, so let's consider it a
release. Again, I only care because I got my hopes up that it would only be
4 songs long and it was 12, so it turned out to be triple the expected tedium.

Something mildly entertaining multiplied by 12 equals something
tedious (if you don't believe me, try reading 12 of Big Lou's reviews in a row!) The songs
on Dead Girl on Earth are bland, no different than any of a hundred or
perhaps a thousand country songs one hears on the car radio while driving
through areas of limited reception.

Kyra needs to ask herself what she wants to accomplish with this music. What
is it that makes her special? Sounding like warmed over Linda Ronstadt isn't
it. My advice to her would be: Start with some more honest songwriting. Tell
people how you really feel about your life, not what you think they want
to hear. Say something that makes listeners want to hit the rewind button and go
back to hear your lyrics over again because you said something so original that they
want to repeat it to their friends. Otherwise, your music will be a collection of
pretty, inoffensive songs that will end up in an unimaginably vast pantheon of other
pretty, inoffensive songs that begin nowhere and lead nowhere. Come to think of it,
maybe a pantheon is the best place for a "Dead Girl", after all.
You can hear and buy the CD here.
